The easiest overnight protein oats: 40 g oats, chia and water overnight, protein stirred in the morning. About 28 g protein, plus a lemon blueberry variation.
Overnight protein oats are oats soaked in liquid overnight, with protein powder stirred in the next morning. This base recipe takes five minutes in the evening, makes one serving and gives you around 28 g of protein, depending on the WAM flavour you use. It’s my breakfast nearly every single day.
Nothing revolutionary – but you kept asking for it, so here it is. The base is deliberately simple, so you can change the toppings every day and never get bored.
Why you’ll love these overnight oats
- 5 minutes of prep the night before – breakfast is ready when you wake up.
- Around 28 g protein per bowl with 30 g WAM Protein.
- Made with water: no milk needed, the protein makes it creamy.
- Endlessly customisable: any WAM flavour, any toppings.
Ingredients (1 serving)
The night before:
- 40 g oats (rolled or porridge oats).
- 1 tsp chia seeds for a thicker texture.
- 250 ml water.
- Optional: a few drops of apple cider vinegar – it makes the oats extra soft and creamy. I’m into it.
In the morning:
- 30 g WAM Protein in your favourite flavour – for example WAM Protein Pure Vanilla, WAM Protein Chocolate Hazelnut, WAM Protein Banana Bread or WAM Protein Iced Coffee.
- Toppings of your choice: fruit, seeds, nuts, nut butter – or all of the above.
Method
- Evening: stir the oats, chia seeds, water and (if using) apple cider vinegar together in a bowl or jar. Cover and put it in the fridge overnight.
- Morning: stir in the WAM Protein until smooth. If it’s too thick, add a splash of water or plant milk.
- Top and enjoy: add whatever makes you happy.
Why add the protein in the morning? Stirring it in fresh keeps the texture smooth and creamy. You can also add it the night before – the oats will just be a little thicker.
Variation: lemon blueberry overnight oats
A fresh, summery version with a bit more chia. Stir together 40 g oats, 30 g WAM Protein Pure Vanilla, 2 tbsp chia seeds, 200 ml water and the juice of 1 lemon the night before (sweeten with a little agave syrup if you like). In the morning, top with soy yoghurt, blueberries and chopped almonds. This version has around 32 g of protein.

Why WAM Protein works in overnight oats
WAM Protein mixes smoothly into cold oats without clumping and isn’t overly sweet, so it doesn’t take over the flavour of your toppings. With 21–23 g of protein per 30 g serving (depending on the flavour) and added leucine, it turns a simple bowl of oats into a filling, protein-rich breakfast.
FAQ
Can I make overnight oats with water instead of milk?
Yes. Water works well, especially when you stir in protein powder in the morning – it adds creaminess and flavour. Plant milk makes the oats a little richer and adds a few grams of extra protein.
How long do overnight protein oats keep?
Without the protein powder and toppings, the soaked oats keep for up to 3 days in the fridge, so you can prepare several jars at once. Add protein and toppings on the day you eat them.
Do I need chia seeds?
No, but they help the oats thicken and give a pudding-like texture. Without them, use a little less water.
