Protein Powder Too Sweet? How to Make Your Shake Enjoyable

Whether you're aiming to build muscle or simply maintaining a healthy diet, protein shakes can significantly help you meet your daily protein needs effortlessly. But what if the protein powder you just bought tastes too sweet for your liking? If the protein powder is overwhelmingly sweet, it can make it difficult or even impossible for many people to enjoy a shake. If this has happened to you, or if you have an opened pack at home and don’t know what to do with it, our article today should help - and in the long run, our WAM Protein might be an ideal alternative for you!

Why Does a Protein Shake Often Taste Too Sweet?

Artificial sweeteners like sucralose or aspartame give protein shakes an extremely sweet taste even in small amounts. These sweeteners are found not only in whey but especially in vegan protein powders to mask the sometimes earthy taste of plant-based proteins like pea, soy, or rice. Some people like the strong sweetness, which can also be purchased separately in various flavours as flavour powders. For others, however, it’s unpleasant and leads to protein powder being unused and eventually thrown away while still half full. So, what can you do to make the shake less sweet?

How to Make Protein Powder Enjoyable

If your shake is too sweet, there are several ways to tone down the flavour and still enjoy it:

1. Dilute It

A simple way to reduce the overall taste is to mix the protein powder with more liquid. Instead of the usual 300 ml of milk, water, or plant-based drink, use 450 ml or more. Use vegan alternatives like unsweetened almond milk, oat milk, or soy milk to create a more neutral base.

2. Mix It

Add neutral-tasting ingredients to your shake to mellow the flavour. Here are some suggestions:

  • Yoghurt: Both regular and soy yoghurt can help balance the taste.
  • Avocado or Cashews: They make the shake creamier and slightly neutralise the sweetness.
  • Spinach or Cauliflower: These vegetables are surprisingly neutral in taste and increase the nutrient content and volume of your shake.
  • Oatmeal: Makes the shake thicker, creamier, and more neutral, providing you with important fibre.
  • Unflavoured Protein Powder: You can also "dilute" your protein with an unflavoured variant.

3. Vary It

Using fruits like banana, strawberry, or raspberry won’t really reduce the sweetness, but you might enjoy the taste more. This works particularly well with a more neutral flavour like vanilla. Chocolate pairs well with nut butter. You can also experiment with a cup of coffee! All these ingredients give your shake an interesting flavour note.

4. Cook and Bake

You can also use your protein powder for baking or incorporate it into other sweet dishes like pudding. Just mix the powder into pancake batter, muffins, or cakes to get an extra portion of protein without other sweeteners like sugar or sweeteners.
