If we had to pick just one single-source plant protein, it would be soy – without hesitation. Soybeans are de-hulled and defatted into flakes, which are then washed to strip away carbohydrates and fibre. Through a process called isoelectric precipitation, we are left with a highly refined isolate containing over 90% pure protein.

Chemically, soy is the closest plant equivalent to animal protein. It is a complete protein, meaning it delivers all nine essential amino acids in sufficient quantities. As an isolate, it digests at over 90%, and its leucine content of around 2.0 g per 30 g serving puts it closest to whey among single plant sources. It also has an exceptionally creamy texture, making it genuinely pleasant to drink.
